The Rise of HDGP Paper: A Game-Changer in Baking and Cooking Applications by Hervé BRUNET-JAILLY, Product Manager for Primabake

In the realm of culinary arts, the quest for more sustainable and efficient materials is ongoing. However, not all parchment papers are created equal. As a notable producer of parchment paper for baking and cooking applications, we embarked on a rigorous journey to develop and produce the best paper 10 years ago. This journey sheds light on the transition from traditional Genuine Parchment (GVP) papers to innovative High-Density Grease Proof (HDGP) papers, marking a pivotal shift in the industry's approach to sustainability and performance.

Genuine Parchment papers, predominantly produced in France, have been the go-to choice for baking, cooking, and food packaging applications for decades. Known for creating a greaseproof barrier, these paperrs nonetheless fall short of the sustainability mark. Despite being marketed as fully compostable, GVP papers are not recyclable. The process involves partially dissolving wood fibers in a sulfuric acid bath to create a cellulosic film barrier. Such a method is not only energy-intensive but also less environmentally friendly.

The industry's quest for more sustainable solutions has led to the advent of High Density Grease Proof (HDGP) papers, primarily produced in Europe. HDGP papers have emerged as a superior alternative, boasting enhanced sustainability credentials, as well as cost-effectiveness and improved performance in baking and cooking applications. This shift represents a significant departure from the misconception that sustainability often comes with higher costs or reduced efficacy.

Among the various HDGP papers, Primabake stands out as a beacon of eco-design and sustainability in the industry. Primabake exemplifies the ideal baking paper, offering exceptional properties for baking and cooking while also prioritizing environmental stewardship. The production of Primabake incorporates eco-responsible technologies, reflecting a commitment to reducing environmental impact through cleaner processes without compromising on cost competitiveness.

The environmental credentials of Primabake have been validated by ECOL Studio S.p.A, an independent and certified laboratory in Italy. Achieving level A in Recyclability according to the evaluation methods of 4evergreen® and Aticelca® 501, Primabake demonstrates aVenco's dedication to promoting sustainable practices across the baking and cooking industry. 4evergreen, a cross-industry alliance of over 100 members, represents the full lifecycle of fiber-based packaging, highlighting the importance of sustainable production and usage practices.

As more and more converters worldwide exclusively adopt Primabake in their operations, it sets a new standard for responsible paper production and usage. This shift not only impacts converters, distributors, retailers, and consumers but also paves the way for a more sustainable future in the baking and cooking industry. The transition to HDGP papers, particularly Primabake, signifies a crucial step towards aligning culinary practices with environmental responsibility, proving that high performance and sustainability can indeed go hand in hand.
